Is there a way to test the speaker in my computer to see if it is working or not? No matter what I do I cannot get any sound to come out of the speaker. All the relevant sliders are correctly set in the volume controls.
Is it possible that because I have a separate sound card in the PC that the speaker is somehow disabled?
The speaker is, in effect, disabled if you have a sound card installed and working in your PC. The only sound that Windows or DOS would emit via the speaker if there were no sound card is a standard beep. When a sound card is installed this beep is replaced by a more musical sound. By default the file ding.wav is played.
The speaker is pretty much redundant if you use Windows. However, you should hear it beep when you start up the PC. If you are still determined to test it, exit Windows to MS-DOS mode and execute the DOS command 'echo ^G', where ^G is the result of typing Ctrl, G. This should result in a beep from the speaker.
